i really like this tweet from Jessica Fox:
What if instead of stepping outside my comfort zone, I step into an even comfier zone. Perhaps take a nap in a large fluffy dinner roll.
okay, minus the nap in a dinner roll but i like comfort zones. they’re safe and lord knows we need more safety in these times. perhaps not all the time but there’s a growing rhetoric that comfort zones are bad and we must take risks, get uncomfortable on purpose, and YOLO are way to a better life. that’s cool… to you.
one place i refuse to do this is with my hobbies, particularly with making music. i’ve been doing this for 16 years. i’ve achieved relative success in that time and i’ve been happy with everything i’ve released. my workflows have changed as have my software and hardware, my likes and dislikes, plugins, inspirations, track name conventions. i’ve felt the discomfort and seen my way to the other side. i’m now comfortable where i am. of course i could push myself to make new genres and try new things. maybe i learn an instrument and stop sampling. except i don’t want to. i work everyday and in my leisure time, i want as much comfort as possible. i don’t want my hobby to feel like a second job because of a made up goal that i’m striving for.
i see gaming much the same way. i play with cheats on. i don’t care how you or the devs want me to play the games i play on my own. it’s my time and my game. you bet i’m doing me and so should you.
we’ve got to find *some* place in our lives where we can say “this is nice and this is mine”. there’ll always be a time for pushing the boundaries and trying something new to awaken some spirit within you. but not for everything.
