Luke Davis

crème brûlée

i’ve not had a great last couple of weeks. in fact, june in general hasn’t been great. or the last few months. i joke that things haven’t been good since i dropped my favourite handheld and the screen broke back in january. but perhaps it goes further back than that in terms of my last true happy period.

that was october. i was sat at my desk, where i’m writing this now, and playing pokémon legends: z-a and getting back into monster rancher (the anime) and although i was nervous about my tenancy renewal, it got extended for a year and i was so relieved. things were starting to look up and i felt safe and comfortable. autumn is my favourite season after years of kidding myself that it was summer. everything was aligning and my birthday and christmas were coming up.

but now i’m here in july. the height of summer and sandwiched between two heatwaves and dodging hay fever symptoms like the plague. this year so far, i lost my father and been told that i have to move out alongside issues at work and it’s honestly a lot.

if you’re wondering what the title means, it relates to an ongoing joke from a bbc comedy series called the league of gentlemen. crème brulee was a band and one of the members called les mcqueen regularly popped up to reminisce about the glory days. he’d say the band name followed by “it’s a shit business”, referring to the fact that those happy times eventually stopped. i refer to it often (at least in my head) because a lot of my happy moments in life end and almost never on my terms—a bit like a band traversing an ever-changing music industry (minus the drugs and drink maybe)
