When I found out about Bubbles and submitted some of my sites, I thought “this is cool, a Hacker News type place but without the comments and it’s for personal blogs”. But lately, articles on the main feeds have felt quite hostile.
I think the vast majority of posts are fine and speak to people’s idiosyncracies and niches which is the whole point. But you’ll see the odd provocative title or a vague one that then alludes to some kind of critique of blogging (or a a critique of the critiques). I saw an article the other day called Stop Writing For Bubbles and while I’m not surprised by the summation—I work in SEO after all—I was taken aback just a little. Even when far removed from the clucthes of the Commercial Web, people still write to be seen in this way? I’m glad my line of work hasn’t impacted how I write on the Web so much that I think of anyone but myself when I write about things I care about.
